As library funding becomes scarcer, and libraries are being forced to cut staff and operating hours, some are turning to unusual tactics to get books to patrons. One of these ideas is the Library Express, a bank of lockers located in strip malls and kiosks. Patrons order a book online and it is delivered to the locker. The patron is then given the code to open the locker, and can retrieve the item on their schedule - eliminating the need to visit the library during business hours.
Some librarians worry this impersonal approach is the beginning of the end for traditional libraries and their programming. The locker method certainly removes the human element of visiting a library. However, other librarians embrace any method that continues to provide books.

#FollowALibrary Day on Twitter
Do you Tweet? Twitter is one of the fastest-growing, most powerful social networking sites today. Entries are limited to 140 characters, which can require creative wording to get your thought across.
You can also add a hash tag to your post to categorize it. Then anyone searching for that category can find your post (if your posts are public - you always have the option of making your posts private!). For example, if you were watching the Olympics you could Tweet "I love watching the diving events! #Olympics". Then if someone searched for "Olympics", any public Tweets with the hash tag "Olympics" would show up in the search results.
Today is #FollowALibrary day. Many libraries are now running Twitter accounts to keep patrons updated on all the events and programs the library offers. The Athens-Clarke Co. Library has two Twitter accounts - one for the main library and one for the Heritage Room. Today is a great opportunity to start following them! And remember to spread the library love on your Twitter account by adding the hash tag #FollowALibrary!
